چکیده

[1] We report the first sub-auroral Pi2 pulsations observations by a SuperDARN type HF radar. The Wallops radar LOS measurements obtained at ionospheric altitudes, 56 magnetic latitude, 23 hour magnetic local time, are shown to be highly correlated with ground magnetic field perturbations obtained at Ottawa. The period of the Pi2 pulsations is 118 s and the m-number is 2.3. The availability of both ionospheric LOS measurements and ground based magnetic field perturbations enable us to constrain the properties of the wave. A predominantly shear Alfven mode wave is able to explain both the amplitude and phase relations of our observations. Although the solar wind dynamic pressure is fairly stable the IMF Bz is highly variable thereby preventing an unambiguous identification of a solar wind trigger. Rather, magnetotail observations of a clear dipolarization and an intensification of the auroral westward electrojet producing a modest ground magnetic bay indicate that the wave is associated with the onset of a weak substorm. SABRE observations of Pi2 pulsations: case studies

The characteristics of substorm-associated Pi2 pulsations observed by the SABRE coherent radar system during three separate case studies are presented. The SABRE field of view is well positioned to observe the differences between the auroral zone pulsation signature and that observed at mid-latitudes. During the first case study the SABRE field of view is initially in the eastward electrojet, e...

Association of Pi2 pulsations and pulsed reconnection: ground and Cluster observations in the tail lobe at 16 RE

Simultaneous measurements from the Cluster spacecraft and several ground stations (SAMNET, IMAGE, Kakioka, Hermanus) provide evidence for an association of Pi2 pulsations and pulsed reconnection in the magnetotail. On 8 September 2002, substorm-related Pi2 pulsations were recorded with the same waveform (same frequency) in the tail lobe at 16 RE and time-delayed on the ground (both nightside an...

Electrodynamics of a substorm-related field line resonance observed by the Polar satellite in comparison with ground Pi2 pulsations

[1] Observations from the Polar satellite during a substorm on 29 August 1996 are used to characterize electrodynamic properties of a nightside field line resonance (FLR). A negative H bay and Pi2 pulsations were simultaneously observed at midlatitude SAMNET ground stations (L = 2.6 4.5, 0000 MLT). During the pulsations, Polar was moving outbound on a 0330 MLT meridian and crossing L shells fro...

Relative timing of substorm onset phenomena

[1] In this paper we examine the temporal ordering of midtail flow bursts, Pi2 pulsations, and auroral arc brightening at substorm onset. We present three substorm events for which the Geotail spacecraft was situated at local midnight, near the inner edge of the plasmasheet. We show that high-speed, convective Earthward directed plasma flows observed by Geotail occurred 1–3 min before auroral o...

Multi-instrument observations of the ionospheric counterpart of a bursty bulk flow in the near-Earth plasma sheet

On 07 September 2001 the Cluster spacecraft observed a “bursty bulk flow” event in the near-Earth central plasma sheet. This paper presents a detailed study of the coincident ground-based observations and attempts to place them within a simple physical framework. The event in question occurs at ∼22:30 UT, some 10 min after a southward turning of the IMF. IMAGE and SAMNET magnetometer measuremen...
